Arichat, a district of Richmond County on Isle Madame, is one of the oldest communities in Nova Scotia, dating back to the 18th century. Arichat had a world standing as a port, as well as an educational and religious center. The Catholic Church in Arichat is older than Canada itself! West Arichat originally called Acadiaville, was founded in 1863. It contributed to the seafaring history of the island through its shipbuilding, coastal trading and local sea captains.
